Today, one in every five children will grow up to develop skin cancer. But that¹s something that famed Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and his wife Shonda are doing their best to change.
After Shonda¹s bout with melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, she and her husband started an awareness program designed to prevent skin cancers of all kinds. The core of their efforts is The Curt and Shonda Schilling Melanoma Foundation, and the organization offers a wealth of valuable information at their website www.shadefoundation.org .
The site contains information about special programs for schools, targeted info for teens, medical resources and ways that YOU can help prevent and fight against this disease. Plus much more.
Whether you are a parent, grandparent, or just someone who cares about yourself and your neighbor, we think you¹ll be wise to see what the Schillings have to offer at this great site. Our hats are off to this remarkable couple and their mission to reduce skin cancers.

Need a fresh answer to the old problem of hot, glaring sunlight?
If you’re like most homeowners, when you made the decision to buy your house you were probably influenced by its deck or patio. You thought it would make a great place to relax on summer weekends, as well as a dynamite spot to entertain. If that was the case, there’s a good chance you later found that, and as nice as it looks- the area is useless much of the time because of the hot, glaring sun.
It’s a common problem today, because there are precious few building sites that offer large trees close enough to provide shade for a home’s deck or patio.
Until recently there was little that could be done, short of settling for an umbrella table or an awning, both of which offer only limited shade. Now, however, there’s a modular, retractable canopy system that provides shade for virtually any deck or patio. The whole area can be shaded … any size … any shape. The canopies are extended in only seconds to provide instant, cooling shade. They can also be retracted on overcast days to allow additional light into the area and the home as well.
The canopies, which come in a wide variety of outdoor decorator fabrics, ride in overhead tracks built into a support system in your choice of wood, aluminum or low-maintenance vinyl. There’s a selection of styles, from classic pergolas and sleek Mediterranean designs to a rugged Alpine look. There are even kits to be added to existing pergolas or arbors, to transform them into a great source of shade.
Unlike conventional shade sources, these modular sections are equipped with a patented wind-release device that lets the canopies float freely in the track should high winds arise. This provides important wind protection for the “outdoor room” the system creates.
Installation can be a simple job for any do-it-yourselfer. All the aluminum and vinyl pieces are pre-cut and pre-drilled for easy assembly, and the canopies themselves are pre-assembled. For those who prefer it, a professional installation service is also available.

On Saturday, May 19th, and Sunday, May 20th, customer sales rep David Markle and his wife Mary played host to their first ShadeTree Canopies open house of the season.
Many potential customers attended the event, despite the overcast afternoon.
“We’ve been thinking about a fixed awning, but after seeing this system we’ll be purchasing a ShadeTree Canopies system,” remarked Saturday’s open house attendee Doris O’Keefe. “The wind release mechanism on the canopies has me very intrigued,” quipped James O’Keefe. “I like the idea that if we’re not home and the weather becomes inclement, that we won’t have to worry about personally retracting the canopies in fear of canopy damage. I really like that concept,” continued Mr. O’Keefe.
Mr. Markle was pleased with the potential customer turnout and was just as content with how the cookout went. “It’s refreshing to see the excitement over our retractable canopy system, but I think I won them over with my hamburgers,” Markle said with a smile.
